The Borough of Dormont would like to encourage everyone to recycle their live Christmas trees.

Christmas Tree farms support complex eco-systems and absorb carbon dioxide and other gases while releasing oxygen. As they grow, the trees also stabilize soil, protect water supplies and provide refuge for wildlife. Don’t let their usefulness end with the holiday season. The benefits of a live Christmas tree can continue by recycling the tree. The live trees are chipped for mulch, which can then be used throughout local parks for beautification. As the mulch decomposes, it turns into valuable humus, nourishing and renewing the soil.

The Borough of Dormont Public Works will host a special Woody Waste Pickup for Christmas Trees on Saturday, January 17. Residents must register by 12pm on Wednesday, January 14, 2026.

Christmas Tree Collection Guidelines:

  • Trees with garland, tinsel, ornaments and/or lights will not be collected.
  • No artificial trees will be collected.
  • Please do not place the trees in bags.
  • Trees must be free of ice and snow to be collected.
  • Please cut trees over 6 feet high in half.

Keeping your tree free of ice and snow: If you place your tree at the curb days or weeks ahead of the collection, rain and snow can freeze the tree to the ground, making it unsafe for the drivers to pick up. Trees stuck to the ground will not be collected. When you take your tree down, leave it in a covered location or cover it with a tarp until your scheduled collection day.
