Quite simply, safety. Building codes help ensure that the structure in which we live, work, learn and play meet safety standards against collapse, fire and other potential dangers. When buildings are not up to code, there is a greater chance for structural failure to occur, causing a hazard to the occupant of the structure or to the public. To avoid costly delays or penalties, permits must be applied for and approved before any work is completed.

A building permit is required for most construction performed. Some construction projects require a third-party agency (MDIA) to perform the inspections. A Building/Zoning Permit is required for new or replacing existing fences, retaining walls, patios, and roofs. Permits are also required for any structural alterations.
A Dumpster permit must be obtained for dumpsters or PODS that will be placed on any Dormont street. If the dumpster/POD is going to be placed in your driveway, a permit is not required.
