Borough of Dormont Statement on Recent U.S. Immigration & Customs Enforcement (ICE) Actions
Late afternoon on June 16, U.S. Immigration & Customs Enforcement (ICE) and the International Criminal Police Organization (INTERPOL) apprehended a suspect on Espy Avenue in Dormont. The agencies notified the Dormont Borough Police Department when they arrived and when they left, as a courtesy.
The Dormont Borough Police Department followed the Immigration Violations Policy of the Borough and did not work with either agency or provide any emergency assistance to the agencies serving the warrant.
This policy provides that members of the Dormont Police Department make personal and professional commitments to equal enforcement of the law and equal service to the public. This includes protecting and serving the entire community and recognizing the dignity of all people, regardless of their national origin or immigration status.
The policy also provides that no member of the department shall inquire about the immigration status of any person or require any individual to produce any document to prove their immigration status. Exceptions may be made for legitimate law enforcement needs that are outlined in the policy.
Additionally, no officers will participate directly in any immigration raids and/or operations. Officers may aid federal immigration authorities when there is an emergency posing an immediate danger to the public safety or to the federal agents.
Further, other Borough departments and staff were recently provided with education about the Police Department’s policy relating to immigration.
Individuals in our community seeking to report concerns, get guidance, and help protect the immigrant community are encouraged to contact Casa San Jose’s Emergency Response Line at (412) 736-7167.
