Porchmont – A celebration of Dormont community and the porches that connect us

Our walkable little Borough has many great features. Our favorite: Porches! They get us outside, they are a great place to play and relax, and they help us build a safe, connected, resilient community. And that’s something to celebrate! Join the Dormont Human Relations Commission (DHRC) and friends and neighbors all over Dormont in celebrating the porches (and lawns, stoops, and other cool spaces) that connect us this August.

PORCH SOCIAL HOURS: Let’s make porch life a habit! From 5-9pm each Saturday in August, Dormont residents are encouraged to hang out on their porches, stoops, driveways and lawns and get to know their neighbors. Stay for all or just part of the time, one night or all of them. Have some drinks and snacks, host a jam session or performance, play some games, or just chill and chat and take in the evening!

TAKE THE CELEBRATION ONLINE: Follow the official Porchmont Facebook Event Page (coming soon!) and keep an eye on the Borough socials to participate in a month of porch and community-related activities on social media. We’ll have fun facts, opportunities to share your Porch Stories, and more. Let’s have some fun celebrating porches and other community spaces, and the amazing friends and memories they help us make.

PORCHMONT – Community Wide Porch Crawl
Saturday, Sept 13, 5pm – 9pm

Wait. Porch crawl?

Think Halloween meets the House Tour. Think block party with a twist. Think summertime porch hang, but bigger and better and filled with friends you haven’t met yet!

On Saturday September 13th, from 5pm – 9pm, folks around Dormont will open up their porches for a full-on community porch hang. Neighbors will cruise the sidewalks of Dormont, popping onto porches, discovering new parts of the community, connecting with old friends, and making some new ones.

Interested in hosting a stop on the porch crawl, but not sure what that means?  It’s up to YOU Dormont!

Whip up a bunch of your famous lemonade and put out some cookies. Host a little jam session on your porch. Feeling artsy? Set out some arts and crafts or set up an impromptu exhibition. Share seeds, produce or flowers from your garden. Or there is the classic porch hang – some drinks, chill vibes and great conversation – honestly, it’s hard to improve on that.

Don’t have a porch? No problem. Porchmont is for everyone! Throw out some lawn chairs and wrangle up some snacks for a picnic vibe. Organize a block party or host a little garden party. Or just go for a walk, explore the neighborhood, and meet the community. Porch is a state of mind.

Thank you for your interest in being a Porchmont Host! The application is now closed. We’d still love to see you at the crawl!

About the artist: The DHRC extends a special thank you to Joshua Hoffman for allowing his art to be used to promote this event. Joshua is a Dormont resident and oil painter specializing in landscape and plein air. Joshua has spent over 20 years practicing oil painting. Since 2020, when Joshua’s works began gaining notoriety, he has been working as a full time Artist. Check out his available works for sale, and an online gallery of previously sold works at joshuahoffmanart.com

What is the Dormont Human Relations Commission (DHRC)?
In 2021 Dormont Borough Council passed a non-discrimination ordinance to ensure all Dormont residents can fully enjoy the Borough without discrimination, in that they are provided with equal opportunity and access to employment, housing, commercial property, and public accommodation regardless of race, color, national origin, immigration status, ancestry, religious creed, age, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, gender expression, veteran’s status, marital status, familial status, genetic information, handicap or disability, or use of an assistance animal.

The Dormont Human Relations Commission, which has 5 seats open to Dormont residents, was created by this ordinance. The Commission is empowered to collect and mediate submitted discrimination complaints; when applicable refer complaints to appropriate social, civic, or governmental agencies for further action; and provide education and outreach to the community on relevant issues.

In doing so, the Commission is designed to create a more welcoming and equitable Borough for all residents, present and future.
