Designating the week of September 8-17, 2023 as “Welcoming Week” in the Borough of Dormont

WHEREAS, we celebrate Welcoming Week as a way of creating home together with communities around the world; and
WHEREAS, Welcoming Week is about bringing neighbors together across lines of difference to build relationships and work together on shared goals; and
WHEREAS, during Welcoming Week, all Dormont residents are invited to join this movement by taking action in the spirit of unity across differences; and
WHEREAS, the Borough of Dormont is home to people of all backgrounds, including those who were not born here, but now call it home. The Borough of Dormont’s success depends on making sure that all residents feel welcome. New residents are a vital part of our community, and along with our long-time residents, bring ideas, start businesses, serve in civic roles, work in critical industries, and contribute to the vibrant diversity that we value; and
WHEREAS, to celebrate diversity as an asset in the Borough of Dormont, our community strives to create a culture and policies that ensures everyone can belong and thrive. To do so we must address disparities, counter hate, understand history, and help neighbors come together; and
WHEREAS, regardless of where we are born or how we identify, we are residents of the Borough of Dormont and our lives are interdependent. It is time to come together and build a community where every resident has the opportunity to thrive and contribute. By fostering a welcoming environment for all—regardless of immigration status, race, ethnicity, place of origin, English language proficiency, religion, income, gender, sexual orientation, differing abilities, age, and other factors—we enhance the Borough of Dormont’s health, economic prosperity, and well-being for current and future generations;
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT PROCLAIMED, by the Borough of Dormont Council and Mayor Walsh that the week of September 8-17, 2023 is hereby designated as Welcoming Week in the Borough of Dormont. This Welcoming Week we celebrate the diversity of our neighbors and call on our residents, business leaders, civic groups, and community institutions to reach across lines of difference, participate in one or more of the Welcoming Week events in the Borough of Dormont, and undertake their own initiatives during Welcoming Week and beyond, to make the Borough of Domont a more welcoming place for new and long-term residents alike.
