Mt. Lebanon Tunnel Ventilation Project Update 1/24/2022

Port Authority of Allegheny County will be replacing four tunnel ventilation fans, controls, and other equipment that makes up the emergency ventilation system of the Mt. Lebanon Transit Tunnel. Construction will begin Monday, January 31, 2022, and is expected to be complete by the end of Summer 2022.

The Mt. Lebanon Transit Tunnel spans from Mt. Lebanon to Dormont. There are two ventilation fans and corresponding equipment on each side of the tunnel.

As you may be aware, in late November of 2020, PennDOT inspectors discovered corrosion on metal infrastructure inside the tunnel, including scaling on the tracks caused by moisture and condensation. Once alerted to the issue, Port Authority began running the existing emergency fans to help reduce the moisture.

Currently the fans are scheduled to run Monday through Friday from 10am-2pm on alternating sides (Monday, Wednesday and Friday on the Mt. Lebanon side; Tuesday and Thursday on the Dormont side)to minimize disruption to residents.

The Mt. Lebanon Transit Tunnel ventilation project will not only reduce the moisture, but the new fans will be much quieter so that when they are in use, they should not be disruptive to residents and businesses.

We will continue to provide updates to borough officials and on our project website at: www.PortAuthority.org/MtLeboTunnelProject.

The construction schedule is attached. Please note that we do not anticipate any major disruptions to light rail service during construction. If this changes, updates will be posted at www.Twitter.com/PghTransitAlert.

If you have questions or concerns, please call Port Authority Customer Service at 412-442-2000 Monday through Friday from 6am-7pm, and weekends from 8am-4:30pm.

You can also submit questions or concerns on the project webpage at: www.PortAuthority.org/MtLeboTunnelProject.

Construction Schedule: Mt. Lebanon Transit Tunnel Ventilation Project
*Please note that this schedule is approximate and may be impacted by supply chain issues.

Construction will occur in two phases, beginning with the Mt. Lebanon side of the tunnel. The contractor will be working nightly from 8pm Monday through 4:30am Saturday. To reduce any disruption to residents and businesses, work that may cause louder sounds, such as jackhammering, will be performed before 10pm. The contractor will make every effort possible to keep construction noise at a minimum.

Phase 1A (January 31 through early March)
The contractor will be completing preparations for the new fans to be installed. The fans are scheduled to run Monday through Friday from 10am-2pm on alternating sides (Monday, Wednesday and Friday on the Mt. Lebanon side; Tuesday and Thursday on the Dormont side).

Crane Lift on the Mt. Lebanon side (early to mid-March)
After preparations are completed on the Mt. Lebanon side, a crane lift will be scheduled. This work may be a little bit louder but will only take one or two days. The old fans will be removed, and the new fans will be installed. We will work with borough officials to provide advance notice when this is scheduled.

Phase 1B (early March through late April)
The contractor will finish the installation of the new fans on the Mt. Lebanon side of the tunnel. During this time, fans on the Dormont side will be running Monday through Friday from 10am-2pm, except on holidays.

Phase 2A (end of April through the end of May)
The contractors will be completing preparations for the new fans to be installed on the Dormont side of the tunnel. During this time, fans will be running on the Mt. Lebanon side Monday through Friday from 10am-2pm, except on holidays. These will be the new fans, and they should not cause any disruption.

Crane Lift on the Dormont Side (end of May to early June)
After preparations are completed on the Dormont side, a crane lift will be scheduled. This work may be a little bit louder but will only take one or two days. The old fans will be removed, and the new fans will be installed. Again, we will work with borough officials to provide advance notice when this is scheduled.

Phase 2B (end of May through mid-July)
The contractors will finish the installation of the new fans on the Dormont side of the tunnel. During this time, fans on the Mt. Lebanon side will be running Monday through Friday from 10am-2pm, except on holidays. These will be the new fans, and they should not cause any disruption.

(mid-July through the end of summer)
The contractor will complete final work items. The new ventilation system will be inspected, and equipment will be removed from the site.
